CUSA Football Countdown, # 9

CUSA Football Countdown, Monday June 23 – July 5, 2014

Taken entirely from the Survey to rank the CUSA with 275 responses here is the order predicted by the voters.  Starting with the team voted to finish # 13 and ending with the #1 team.  I would like to thank all those that took part in the survey and the outstanding response we received. Using the surveys predicted finish we turned your voted order into a prediction of how each team may fair against schools on their schedule.  We looked at past history, home field advantage(s) and tried to correlate the predicted order with a win/loss projection. We hope this stimulates some conversation and good luck to everyone in CUSA in 2014.  The countdown starts today June 23 and will run till we reveal the #1 team as predicted by the survey on July 5, 2014.  We will also reveal all the stats from the survey on July 5, as well.

Again thanks and enjoy.

  1. Old Dominion  (8-4)  CUSA:  2014 Prediction (5-7) ODU has only had two coaches in its history Tommy Scott from 1930-1941 at which time The US’s entry into World War II was eminent and was one of the reasons the two year school was under pressure to halt the program before 1942. The rebirth of the program emerged in 2009 when Bobby Wider was hired to lead the Monarch’s into a new era. Even though Wilder will be heading into his 8th year at the helm, the Monarchs did not play their 1st down of Football till 2009 and Wilder has compiled a 5 year record of 46-14 as he will lead the Monarchs into their 6th season. ODU play’s in the 20,118 seat Forman Field at SB Ballard Stadium. A new 30,000 plus seat Stadium on the water is planned to open in 2017-18. The offense has been high octane from the begging. ODU’s 2nd QB tapped to step in and guide the team as a freshman after the injury of Sr. Thomas Demarco never missed a beat. Taylor Heinicke is not only mobile his accuracy is easily what has won him numerous awards the last three years.  Fortunately for ODU backups or potential successors, David Washington and incoming Parade All-American Shuler Bentley appear more than capable to step in without a hick-up. The receiving corp. has a list of potential starters including last year’s top two returners Larry Pinkard and Antonio Vaughan.  The offensive line in 2014 will need to file the holes vacated due to graduation.

The Defense, as in years past has historically been an area of concern.  At the linebacker position Freshman Richie Staton and senior D.J. Simon return, Andre Simmons moves to OLB from strong safety and former star recruit Kanyia Anderson was moved several times in 2013 as emergency moves due to injuries that continued to hit the Monarchs all season.   However ODU signed three JUCO transfers and will look to youth this year to prepare for the future.  Ranked as the  2nd best recruiting class in CUSA last year, Aim High is where Monarch fans hope the team is headed as new members of CUSA.
